Roof racks are popular ways to load and carry cargo on road trips. After you have selected the proper roof rack for your particular vehicle, it is important to make sure that it is bolted down and used correctly.

Choose a box for your cargo that is not any wider than your vehicle or the roof rack bolted down. After it is placed on top of the car, use a safety strap to stretch across the width. Make sure that the safety strap loops under the cross bar of the roof rack. Then, loop the strap back around the width of the cargo again. To finish, any extra portion of the strap should be tied around the rack. Under no circumstances should any portion of the cargo obstruct the driver's view.

If you are not using the roof rack to transport cargo, consider taking it down to save on gas mileage.
